1847
The city was first known as Yerba Buena, Spanish for ‘good herb,’ before it was renamed San Francisco and the Gold Rush turned it into one of the fastest-growing cities on earth.

The great earthquake and fire leveled much of the city – but San Francisco rebuilt within a few years, and it’s the reason so many neighborhoods still show off Victorian and Edwardian architecture today.
